Childhood and musical background

Born in General, Tennessee, United States, Big Maybelle sang gospel as a youngster and by her teens difficult to understand switched to rhythm and vapours. She began her professional job with Dave Clark's Memphis Button in 1936, and also toured with the all female Universal Sweethearts of Rhythm.
